Intestinal Mucosa

Medical Definition: The innermost membrane of the four coats of the intestinal wall, the other three being the submucosa, muscular layers, and serosa. (Berk et al., Gastroenterology, 4th ed, v.3, p1479)

Intestinal Mucosa Categories.
Canadian Medical Guide Definition Enterocytes - Terminally differentiated cells comprising the majority of the external surface of the intestinal epithelium (see INTESTINAL MUCOSA). Unlike GOBLET CELLS, they do not produce or secrete mucins, nor do they secrete cryptdins as do the PANETH CELLS.
Canadian Medical Guide Definition Goblet Cells - Cells of the epithelial lining that produce and secrete mucins.
Canadian Medical Guide Definition Paneth Cells - Epithelial cells found in the basal part of the intestinal glands (crypts of Lieberkuhn). Paneth cells synthesize and secrete lysozyme and cryptdins.
