Communication

Medical Definition:	The exchange or transmission of ideas, attitudes, or beliefs between individuals or groups.

Communication Categories.

	Communication Barriers - Those factors, such as language or sociocultural relationships, which interfere in the meaningful interpretation and transmission of ideas between individuals or groups.
	Disclosure - Revealing of information, by oral or written communication.
	Duty to Recontact - The ethical and/or legal obligation of a health provider or researcher to communicate with a former patient or research subject about advances in research relevant to a treatment or to a genetic or other diagnostic test provided earlier, or about proposed new uses of blood or tissue samples taken in the past for another purpose.
	Information Dissemination - The circulation or wide dispersal of information.
	Interdisciplinary Communication - Communication, in the sense of cross-fertilization of ideas, involving two or more academic disciplines (such as the disciplines that comprise the cross-disciplinary field of bioethics, including the health and biological sciences, the humanities, and the social sciences and law). Also includes problems in communication stemming from differences in patterns of language usage in different academic or medical disciplines.
	Language - A verbal or nonverbal means of communicating ideas or feelings.
	Negotiating - The process of bargaining in order to arrive at an agreement or compromise on a matter of importance to the parties involved. It also applies to the hearing and determination of a case by a third party chosen by the parties in controversy, as well as the interposing of a third party to reconcile the parties in controversy.
	Nonverbal Communication - Transmission of emotions, ideas, and attitudes between individuals in ways other than the spoken language.
	Persuasive Communication - A mode of communication concerned with inducing or urging the adoption of certain beliefs, theories, or lines of action by others.
	Propaganda - The deliberate attempt to influence attitudes and beliefs for furthering one's cause or damaging an opponent's cause. (POPLINE Thesaurus 1991)
	Verbal Behavior - Includes both producing and responding to words, either written or spoken.
