Stomach
Medical Definition: | An organ of digestion situated in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen between the termination of the ESOPHAGUS and the beginning of the DUODENUM. |

Cardia - That part of the stomach surrounded by the esophagogastric junction, characterized by the lack of acid-forming cells. | |
Gastric Fundus - The superior portion of the body of the stomach above the level of the cardiac notch. | |
Gastric Mucosa - Surface epithelium in the stomach that invaginates into the lamina propria, forming gastric pits. Tubular glands, characteristic of each region of the stomach (cardiac, gastric, and pyloric), empty into the gastric pits. The gastric mucosa is made up of several different kinds of cells. | |
Gastric Stump - That portion of the stomach remaining after gastric surgery, usually gastrectomy or gastroenterostomy for cancer of the stomach or peptic ulcer. It is a common site of cancer referred to as stump cancer or carcinoma of the gastric stump. | |
