Spectrometry, X-Ray Emission
Medical Definition: | Identification and measurement of concentration of elements based on the fact that x-rays emitted by an excited element have a wavelength characteristic of that element and an intensity related to its concentration. It includes fluorescence, or secondary-emission, x-ray spectrometry, in which the specimen is irradiated by x-rays. Primary-emission x-ray spectrometry, in which the specimen is bombarded by electrons, is a specific type of x-ray emission spectrometry known as ELECTRON PROBE MICROANALYSIS. |
Guide Notes: | a type of spectrum anal; NIM; do not confuse with any of numerous X refs under ELECTRON PROBE MICROANALYSIS; do not confuse X ref SPECTROMETRY, X-RAY FLUORESCENCE with SPECTROMETRY, FLUORESCENCE |
Also Called: | X-Ray Emission Spectroscopy,X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry |

Electron Probe Microanalysis - Identification and measurement of concentration of elements based on the fact that primary-emission x-rays emitted by an element excited by an electron beam have a wavelength characteristic of that element and an intensity related to its concentration. It may be performed by an electron probe microanalyzer, an electron microscope microanalyzer, or by an electron microscope, or scanning electron microscope, fitted with an x-ray spectrometer. |
