Amides

Medical Definition: Organic compounds containing the -CO-NH2 radical. Amides are derived from acids by replacement of -OH by -NH2 or from ammonia by the replacement of H by an acyl group. (From Grant & Hackh's Chemical Dictionary, 5th ed)
Amides Categories.
Canadian Medical Guide Definition Acetamides - Derivatives of acetamide that are used as solvents, as mild irritants, and in organic synthesis.
Canadian Medical Guide Definition Acrylamides - Colorless, odorless crystals that are used extensively in research laboratories for the preparation of polyacrylamide gels for electrophoresis and in organic synthesis, and polymerization. Some of its polymers are used in sewage and wastewater treatment, permanent press fabrics, and as soil conditioning agents.
Canadian Medical Guide Definition Anilides
Canadian Medical Guide Definition Benzamides - BENZOIC ACID amides.
Canadian Medical Guide Definition Benzoylarginine-2-Naphthylamide - An enzyme substrate which permits the measurement of peptide hydrolase activity, e.g. trypsin and thrombin. The enzymes liberate 2-naphthylamine, which is measured by colorimetric procedures.
Canadian Medical Guide Definition Cerulenin - Antifungal antibiotic isolated from several species, including Acremonium (Cephalosporium), Acrocylindrum, and Helicoceras. It inhibits the biosynthesis of several lipids by interfering with enzyme function and is used as a biochemical tool.
Canadian Medical Guide Definition Dibucaine - A local anesthetic of the amide type now generally used for surface anesthesia. It is one of the most potent and toxic of the long-acting local anesthetics and its parenteral use is restricted to spinal anesthesia. (From Martindale, The Extra Pharmacopoeia, 30th ed, p1006)
Canadian Medical Guide Definition Formamides - A group of amides with the general formula of R-CONH2.
Canadian Medical Guide Definition Lactams - Cyclic amides formed from aminocarboxy acids by the elimination of water. Lactims are the enol forms of lactams.
Canadian Medical Guide Definition Salicylamides - Amides of salicylic acid.
Canadian Medical Guide Definition Sulfonamides - A group of compounds that contain the structure SO2NH2. Members of this group, also known as sulfa drugs, are derivatives of sulfanilamide, which competitively inhibit folic acid synthesis in microorganisms, and are bacteriostatic. They have been largely supplanted by more effective and less toxic antibiotics. (From Dorland, 28th ed)
Canadian Medical Guide Definition Thioamides - Organic compounds containing the radical -CSNH2.
