Bears - Plantigrade carnivorous or omnivorous mammals of the family Ursidae, having massive bodies, coarse heavy fur, relatively short limbs, and almost rudimentary tails. (Random House Unabridged Dictionary, 2d ed)
Cats - The domestic cat, Felis catus, of the carnivore family Felidae, comprising over 30 different breeds. The domestic cat is descended primarily from the wild cat of Africa and extreme southwestern Asia. Though probably present in towns in Palestine as long ago as 7000 years, actual domestication occurred in Egypt about 4000 years ago. (From Walker's Mammals of the World, 5th ed, p1192)
Cheetahs - Long-legged, swift-moving felines from Africa (and formerly Asia) about the size of a small leopard.
Dogs - The domestic dog, Canis familiaris, comprising about 400 breeds, of the carnivore family Canidae. They are worldwide in distribution and live in association with people. (Walker's Mammals of the World, 5th ed, p1065)
Ferrets - Semidomesticated variety of European polecat much used for hunting rodents and/or rabbits and as a laboratory animal.
Foxes - Carnivores of the genus Vulpes of the family Canidae. There are 10 species found in North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. The red fox, Vulpes vulpes, whose coloration ranges from yellowish red to deep reddish brown, black, white, or silver, rivals the gray wolf (Canis lupus) for having the greatest natural distribution of any living terrestrial mammal besides man. (Walker's Mammals of the World, 5th ed, p1050)
Lions - Large chiefly nocturnal mammals of the cat family Felidae, species Panthera leo. They are found in Africa and southern Asia.
Mink - Carnivores of genus Mustela of the family Mustelidae. Although widely trapped for commercial purposes, the fur of the European mink is not as valuable as that of the American mink. At present it is found only in the Soviet Union, Finland, eastern Poland, parts of the Balkans, western France, and northern Spain. The American mink, raised mostly commercially, has been introduced into the Soviet Union, and escaped animals have established populations in Iceland, Ireland, Great Britain, Scandinavia, and Germany. (Walker's Mammals of the World, 5th ed, p1111-2)
Mongooses - Agile, keen-sighted mammals of Asia and Africa that feed on rodents and snakes. They represent several genera in the family Viverridae.
Otters - Fish-eating carnivores of the family Mustelidae, found on both hemispheres.
Raccoons - Carnivores of the genus Procyon of the family Procyonidae. Two subgenera and seven species are currently recognized. They range from southern Canada to Panama and are found in several of the Caribbean Islands. Because of its commercial value, one species, P. lotor, was introduced into France, the Netherlands, Germany, and the Soviet Union but it is now largely considered a nuisance in Europe. (Walker's Mammals of the World, 5th ed, p1100-1)
Skunks - Omnivorous New World mammals of the family Mustelidae, showing typical warning coloration of patterned black and white and able to eject a malodorous secretion when the animal is startled or in danger.
Wolves - Any of several large carnivorous mammals of the family Canidae usually hunting in packs, formerly common throughout the Northern Hemisphere but now chiefly restricted to the more unpopulated parts of its range. (From Random House Unabridged Dictionary, 2d ed) |
