Synovitis

Medical Definition: Inflammation of a synovial membrane. It is usually painful, particularly on motion, and is characterized by a fluctuating swelling due to effusion within a synovial sac. (Dorland, 27th ed)
Guide Notes: inflamm of synovial membrane: do not confuse with TENOSYNOVITIS, inflamm of tendon sheath
Synovitis Categories.
Canadian Medical Guide Definition Synovitis, Pigmented Villonodular - Outgrowths of synovial membrane composed of villi and fibrous nodules characterized histologically by hemosiderin- and lipid-containing macrophages and multinucleated giant cells. It usually occurs in the knee.
