Pyrimidines

Medical Definition: A family of 6-membered heterocyclic compounds occurring in nature in a wide variety of forms. They include several nucleic acid constituents (CYTOSINE; THYMINE; and URACIL) and form the basic structure of the barbiturates.
Pyrimidines Categories.
Canadian Medical Guide Definition Buspirone - An anxiolytic agent and a serotonin receptor agonist belonging to the azaspirodecanedione class of compounds. Its structure is unrelated to those of the benzodiazepines, but it has an efficacy comparable to DIAZEPAM.
Canadian Medical Guide Definition Dipyridamole - A phosphodiesterase inhibitor that blocks uptake and metabolism of adenosine by erythrocytes and vascular endothelial cells. Dipyridamole also potentiates the antiaggregating action of prostacyclin. (From AMA Drug Evaluations Annual, 1994, p752)
Canadian Medical Guide Definition Fursultiamin - Compound used for therapy of thiamine deficiency. It has also been suggested for several non-deficiency disorders but has not yet proven useful.
Canadian Medical Guide Definition Hexetidine - A bactericidal and fungicidal antiseptic. It is used as a 0.1% mouthwash for local infections and oral hygeine. (From Martindale, The Extra Pharmacopoeia, 30th ed, p797)
Canadian Medical Guide Definition Mopidamol - A phosphodiesterase inhibitor which inhibits platelet aggregation. Formerly used as an antineoplastic.
Canadian Medical Guide Definition Morantel - Antinematodal agent used mainly for livestock.
Canadian Medical Guide Definition Pyrantel - A depolarizing neuromuscular-blocking agent, that causes persistent nicotinic activation resulting in spastic paralysis of susceptible nematodes. It is a drug of second-choice after benzimidazoles for treatment of ascariasis, hookworm, and pinworm infections, being effective after a single dose. (From Smith and Reynard, Textbook of Pharmacology, 1992, p920)
Canadian Medical Guide Definition Pyrimethamine - One of the FOLIC ACID ANTAGONISTS that is used as an antimalarial or with a sulfonamide to treat toxoplasmosis.
Canadian Medical Guide Definition Pyrimidinones
Canadian Medical Guide Definition Trimethoprim - A pyrimidine inhibitor of dihydrofolate reductase, it is an antibacterial related to PYRIMETHAMINE. The interference with folic acid metabolism may cause a depression of hematopoiesis. It is potentiated by SULFONAMIDES and the TRIMETHOPRIM-SULFAMETHOXAZOLE COMBINATION is the form most often used. It is sometimes used alone as an antimalarial. TRIMETHOPRIM RESISTANCE has been reported.
