Poxviridae Infections

Medical Definition:	Virus diseases caused by the POXVIRIDAE.

Poxviridae Infections Categories.

	Cowpox - A mild, eruptive skin disease of milk cows caused by COWPOX VIRUS, with lesions occurring principally on the udder and teats. Human infection may occur while milking an infected animal.
	Ecthyma, Contagious - An infectious dermatitis of sheep and goats, affecting primarily the muzzle and lips. It is caused by a poxvirus and may be transmitted to man.
	Ectromelia, Infectious - A viral infection of mice, causing edema and necrosis followed by limb loss.
	Fowlpox - A poxvirus infection of poultry and other birds characterized by the formation of wart-like nodules on the skin and diphtheritic necrotic masses (cankers) in the upper digestive and respiratory tracts.
	Lumpy Skin Disease - A poxvirus infection of cattle characterized by the appearance of nodules on all parts of the skin.
	Molluscum Contagiosum - A common, benign, usually self-limited viral infection of the skin and occasionally the conjunctivae by a poxvirus (MOLLUSCUM CONTAGIOSUM VIRUS). (Dorland, 27th ed)
	Monkeypox - A viral disease infecting PRIMATES and RODENTS. Its clinical presentation in humans is similar to SMALLPOX including FEVER; HEADACHE; COUGH; and a painful RASH. It is caused by MONKEYPOX VIRUS and is usually transmitted to humans through BITES or via contact with an animal's BLOOD. Interhuman transmission is relatively low (significantly less than smallpox).
	Myxomatosis, Infectious
	Smallpox - An acute, highly contagious, often fatal infectious disease caused by an orthopoxvirus characterized by a biphasic febrile course and distinctive progressive skin eruptions. Vaccination has succeeded in eradicating smallpox worldwide. (Dorland, 28th ed)
	Vaccinia - The cutaneous and occasional systemic reactions associated with vaccination using smallpox (variola) vaccine.
