Virus Diseases
Medical Definition: | A general term for diseases produced by viruses. |
Guide Notes: | GEN: prefer specifics; /drug ther: consider also ANTIVIRAL AGENTS |
Arbovirus Infections - Infections caused by arthropod-borne viruses, general or unspecified.
Bronchiolitis, Viral - An acute inflammatory disease of the upper respiratory tract, caused by paramyxoviruses, occurring primarily in infants and young children; the viruses most commonly implicated are parainfluenza type 3 and respiratory syncytial virus.
Central Nervous System Viral Diseases - Viral infections of the brain, spinal cord, meninges, or perimeningeal spaces.
DNA Virus Infections | |
Eye Infections, Viral - Infections of the eye caused by minute intracellular agents. These infections may lead to severe inflammation in various parts of the eye - conjunctiva, iris, eyelids, etc. Several viruses have been identified as the causative agents. Among these are Herpesvirus, Adenovirus, Poxvirus, and Myxovirus.
Fatigue Syndrome, Chronic - A syndrome characterized by persistent or recurrent fatigue, diffuse musculoskeletal pain, sleep disturbances, and subjective cognitive impairment of 6 months duration or longer. Symptoms are not caused by ongoing exertion; are not relieved by rest; and result in a substantial reduction of previous levels of occupational, educational, social, or personal activities. Minor alterations of immune, neuroendocrine, and autonomic function may be associated with this syndrome. There is also considerable overlap between this condition and FIBROMYALGIA. (From Semin Neurol 1998;18(2):237-42; Ann Intern Med 1994 Dec 15;121(12): 953-9)
Hepatitis, Viral, Animal - Viral hepatitis in animals.
Hepatitis, Viral, Human - Viral hepatitis in man.
Pneumonia, Viral - Pneumonia caused by a virus. (Dorland, 28th ed)
RNA Virus Infections | |
Skin Diseases, Viral - Skin diseases caused by viruses.
Slow Virus Diseases - Diseases of viral origin, characterized by incubation periods of months to years, insidious onset of clinical manifestations, and protracted clinical course. Though the disease process is protracted, viral multiplication may not be unusually slow. Conventional viruses produce slow virus diseases such as SUBACUTE SCLEROSING PANENCEPHALITIS, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (LEUKOENCEPHALOPATHY, PROGRESSIVE MULTIFOCAL), and AIDS. Diseases produced by unconventional agents were originally considered part of this group. They are now called PRION DISEASES.
Tumor Virus Infections - Infections produced by oncogenic viruses. The infections caused by DNA viruses are less numerous but more diverse than those caused by the RNA oncogenic viruses. |
