Histocytochemistry
Medical Definition: | Study of intracellular distribution of chemicals, reaction sites, enzymes, etc., by means of staining reactions, radioactive isotope uptake, selective metal distribution in electron microscopy, or other methods. |
Guide Notes: | = histochem or cytochem or both; NIM usually with no qualif; SPEC qualif when IM; histochem of disease is disease /metab; Manual 26.11+ |
Also Called: | Histochemical Effects,Cytochemistry |
Immunohistochemistry - Histochemical localization of immunoreactive substances using labeled antibodies as reagents.
Periodic Acid-Schiff Reaction - A histochemical technique for staining carbohydrates. It is based on PERIODIC ACID oxidation of a substance containing adjacent hydroxyl groups. The resulting aldehydes react with Schiff reagent to form a colored product.
Prussian Blue Reaction - The reaction of potassium ferrocyanide with ferric iron to yield a dark blue precipitate at the sites of the ferric iron. Used to determine ferric iron in tissues, particularly in the diagnosis of disorders of iron metabolism. |
