Histocytochemistry

Medical Definition:	Study of intracellular distribution of chemicals, reaction sites, enzymes, etc., by means of staining reactions, radioactive isotope uptake, selective metal distribution in electron microscopy, or other methods.

Histocytochemistry Categories.

	Immunohistochemistry - Histochemical localization of immunoreactive substances using labeled antibodies as reagents.
	Periodic Acid-Schiff Reaction - A histochemical technique for staining carbohydrates. It is based on PERIODIC ACID oxidation of a substance containing adjacent hydroxyl groups. The resulting aldehydes react with Schiff reagent to form a colored product.
	Prussian Blue Reaction - The reaction of potassium ferrocyanide with ferric iron to yield a dark blue precipitate at the sites of the ferric iron. Used to determine ferric iron in tissues, particularly in the diagnosis of disorders of iron metabolism.
