Health Occupations
Medical Definition: | Professions or other business activities directed to the cure and prevention of disease. For occupations of medical personnel who are not physicians but who are working in the fields of medical technology, physical therapy, etc., ALLIED HEALTH OCCUPATIONS is available. |

Acupuncture - The occupational discipline of the traditional Chinese methods of ACUPUNCTURE THERAPY for treating disease by inserting needles along specific pathways or meridians. | |
Allied Health Occupations - Occupations of medical personnel who are not physicians, and are qualified by special training and, frequently, by licensure to work in supporting roles in the health care field. These occupations include, but are not limited to, medical technology, physical therapy, physician assistant, etc. | |
Biomedical Engineering - Application of principles and practices of engineering science to biomedical research and health care. | |
Chiropractic - An occupational discipline founded by D.D. Palmer in the 1890's based on the relationship of the spine to health and disease. The spine is analyzed by X-rays and palpation, and vertebrae are adjusted manually to relieve pressures on the spinal cord. OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE was originally similar but has become more like FAMILY PRACTICE. | |
Dietetics - The study and regulation of the diet. | |
Environmental Health - The science of controlling or modifying those conditions, influences, or forces surrounding man which relate to promoting, establishing, and maintaining health. | |
Health Services Administration - The organization and administration of health services dedicated to the delivery of health care. | |
Hospital Administration - Management of the internal organization of the hospital. | |
Medical Illustration - The field which deals with illustrative clarification of biomedical concepts, as in the use of diagrams and drawings. The illustration may be produced by hand, photography, computer, or other electronic or mechanical methods. | |
Medicine - The art and science of preventing, diagnosing, and treating disease, as well as the maintenance of health. | |
Mortuary Practice - Activities associated with the physical burial of the dead. It excludes cultural practices such as funeral rites. | |
Nursing - The field of nursing care concerned with the promotion, maintenance, and restoration of health. | |
Nursing, Practical - The practice of nursing by licensed, non-registered persons qualified to provide routine care to the sick. | |
Nutrition - The science of food, the nutrients and other substances contained therein, their action, interaction, and balance in relation to health and disease. | |
Optometry - The professional practice of primary eye and vision care that includes the measurement of visual refractive power and the correction of visual defects with lenses or glasses. | |
Pharmacy - The practice of compounding and dispensing medicinal preparations. | |
Podiatry - A specialty concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of foot disorders and injuries and anatomic defects of the foot. | |
Serology - The study of serum, especially of antigen-antibody reactions in vitro. | |
Specialism - The limitation of practice or study to a particular branch of medicine, dentistry, or other health profession. It is philosophically distinct from the generalist theory in which familiarity with a wide cross-section of the particular discipline is advocated. | |
Veterinary Medicine - The medical science concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases in animals. |
