Ostomy

Medical Definition:	Surgical construction of an artificial opening (stoma) for external fistulization of a duct or vessel by insertion of a tube with or without a supportive stent.

Ostomy Categories.

	Cystostomy - Surgical creation of an opening (stoma) for drainage of the urinary bladder.
	Middle Ear Ventilation - Ventilation of the middle ear in the treatment of secretory (serous) otitis media, usually by placement of tubes or grommets which pierce the tympanic membrane.
	Pharyngostomy - External surgical fistulization of the pharynx for feeding.
	Thoracostomy - Surgical creation of an opening (stoma) into the chest cavity for drainage; used in the treatment of pleural effusion, pneumothorax, hemothorax and empyema.
	Tracheostomy - Surgical formation of an opening into the trachea through the neck, or the opening so created.
	Ureterostomy - Surgical formation of an opening in the ureter for external drainage of the urine; cutaneous route utilizes a ureteral orifice emerging through the skin.
