Anastomosis, Surgical

Medical Definition:	Surgical union or shunt between ducts, tubes or vessels. It may be end-to-end, end-to-side, side-to-end, or side-to-side.

Anastomosis, Surgical Categories.

	Anastomosis, Roux-en-Y - A Y-shaped surgical anastomosis of any part of the digestive system which includes the small intestine as the eventual drainage site.
	Arteriovenous Shunt, Surgical - Surgical shunt allowing direct passage of blood from an artery to a vein. (From Dorland, 28th ed)
	Cerebrospinal Fluid Shunts - Tubes inserted to create communication between a cerebral ventricle and the internal jugular vein. Their emplacement permits draining of cerebrospinal fluid for relief of hydrocephalus or other condition leading to fluid accumulation in the ventricles.
	Cholecystostomy - Establishment of an opening into the gallbladder either for drainage or surgical communication with another part of the digestive tract, usually the duodenum or jejunum.
	Choledochostomy - Surgical formation of an opening (stoma) into the COMMON BILE DUCT for drainage or for direct communication with a site in the small intestine, primarily the DUODENUM or JEJUNUM.
	Endolymphatic Shunt - Surgical fistulization of the membranous labyrinth of the inner ear with mastoid, subarachnoid or cochlear shunt. This procedure is used in the treatment of Meniere's disease.
	Gastroenterostomy - A variety of surgical reconstructive procedures devised to restore gastrointestinal continuity, The two major classes of reconstruction are the Billroth I (gastroduodenostomy) and Billroth II (gastrojejunostomy) procedures.
	Heart Bypass, Right - Diversion of the flow of blood from the entrance to the right atrium directly to the pulmonary arteries, avoiding the right atrium and right ventricle (Dorland, 28th ed). This a permanent procedure often performed to bypass a congenitally deformed right atrium or right ventricle.
	Jejunoileal Bypass - A surgical procedure consisting of the anastomosis of the proximal part of the jejunum to the distal portion of the ileum, so as to bypass the nutrient-absorptive segment of the small intestine, to treat morbid obesity.
	Pancreaticojejunostomy - Surgical anastomosis of the pancreatic duct, or the divided end of the transected pancreas, with the jejunum. (Dorland, 28th ed)
	Pericardial Window Techniques - Surgical construction of an opening or window in the pericardium. It is often called subxiphoid pericardial window technique.
	Peritoneovenous Shunt - An operation for the continuous emptying of ascitic fluid into the venous system. Fluid removal is based on intraperitoneal and intrathoracic superior vena cava pressure differentials and is performed via a pressure-sensitive one-way valve connected to a tube traversing the subcutaneous tissue of the chest wall to the neck where it enters the internal jugular vein and terminates in the superior vena cava. It is used in the treatment of intractable ascites.
	Portasystemic Shunt, Surgical - Surgical venous shunt between the portal and systemic circulation to effect decompression of the portal circulation. It is performed primarily in the treatment of bleeding esophageal varices resulting from portal hypertension. Types of shunt include portacaval, splenorenal, mesocaval, splenocaval, left gastric-caval (coronary-caval), portarenal, umbilicorenal, and umbilicocaval.
	Portoenterostomy, Hepatic - Operation for biliary atresia by anastomosis of the bile ducts into the jejunum or duodenum.
	Salpingostomy - Formation of an artificial opening in a fallopian tube.
	Vasovasostomy - Surgical anastomosis or fistulization of the spermatic ducts to restore fertility in a previously vasectomized male.
