Picornaviridae

Medical Definition: A family of small RNA viruses comprising some important pathogens of humans and animals. Transmission usually occurs mechanically. There are six genera: APHTHOVIRUS; CARDIOVIRUS; ENTEROVIRUS; HEPATOVIRUS; PARECHOVIRUS; and RHINOVIRUS.

Canadian Medical Guide Definition Aphthovirus - A genus of the family PICORNAVIRIDAE infecting mainly cloven-hoofed animals. They cause vesicular lesions and upper respiratory tract infections. FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE VIRUS is the type species.
