Acute Disease - Disease having a short and relatively severe course. | |
Catastrophic Illness - An acute or prolonged illness usually considered to be life-threatening or with the threat of serious residual disability. Treatment may be radical and is frequently costly. | |
Chronic Disease - Diseases which have one or more of the following characteristics: they are permanent, leave residual disability, are caused by nonreversible pathological alteration, require special training of the patient for rehabilitation, or may be expected to require a long period of supervision, observation, or care. (Dictionary of Health Services Management, 2d ed) | |
Convalescence - The period of recovery following an illness. | |
Critical Illness - A disease or state in which death is possible or imminent. | |
Disease Progression - The worsening of a disease over time. This concept is most often used for chronic and incurable diseases where the stage of the disease is an important determinant of therapy and prognosis. | |
Disease Susceptibility - A constitution or condition of the body which makes the tissues react in special ways to certain extrinsic stimuli and thus tends to make the individual more than usually susceptible to certain diseases. | |
Diseases in Twins - Disorders affecting twins, one or both, at any age. | |
Emergencies - Situations or conditions having a high probability of disabling or immediately life-threatening consequences or requiring first aid or other immediate intervention. | |
Facies - The appearance of the face that is often characteristic of a disease or pathological condition, as the elfin facies of WILLIAMS SYNDROME or the mongoloid facies of DOWN SYNDROME. (Random House Unabridged Dictionary, 2d ed) | |
Iatrogenic Disease - Any adverse condition in a patient occurring as the result of treatment by a physician, surgeon, or other health professional, especially infections acquired by the patient during the course of treatment. | |
Rare Diseases - A large group of diseases which are characterized by a low prevalence in the population. They frequently are associated with problems in diagnosis and treatment. | |
Recurrence - The return of a sign, symptom, or disease after a remission. |
