Alkanes

Medical Definition:	The generic name for the group of aliphatic hydrocarbons Cn-H2n+2. They are denoted by the suffix -ane. (Grant & Hackh's Chemical Dictionary, 5th ed)

Alkanes Categories.

	Alkanesulfonic Acids - Sulfonic acid derivatives that are substituted with an aliphatic hydrocarbon group.
	Butanes
	Ethane
	Fumonisins - A group of MYCOTOXINS found in CORN contaminated with FUSARIUM fungus. They are chains of about 20 carbons with acidic ester and acetylamino and sometimes other substituents. They disrupt metabolism of SPHINGOLIPIDS.
	Heptanes - Seven-carbon saturated hydrocarbon group of the methane series. Include isomers and derivatives.
	Hexanes - Six-carbon saturated hydrocarbon group of the methane series. Include isomers and derivatives. Various polyneuropathies are caused by hexane poisoning.
	Methane - The simplest saturated hydrocarbon. It is a colorless, flammable gas, slightly soluble in water. It is one of the chief constituents of natural gas and is formed in the decomposition of organic matter. (Grant & Hackh's Chemical Dictionary, 5th ed)
	Nitroparaffins
	Octanes - Eight-carbon saturated hydrocarbon group of the methane series. Include isomers and derivatives.
	Pentanes - Five-carbon saturated hydrocarbon group of the methane series. Include isomers and derivatives.
	Propane
