Hematologic Agents

Medical Definition:	Drugs that act on blood and blood-forming organs and those that affect the hemostatic system.

Hematologic Agents Categories.

	Anticoagulants - Agents that prevent blood clotting. Naturally occurring agents in the blood are included only when they are used as drugs.
	Antisickling Agents - Agents used to prevent or reverse the pathological events leading to sickling of erythrocytes in sickle cell conditions.
	Blood Substitutes - Substances that can carry oxygen to and carbon dioxide away from the tissues when introduced into the blood stream. They are used to replace hemoglobin in severe hemorrhage and also to perfuse isolated organs. The best known are perfluorocarbon emulsions and various hemoglobin solutions.
	Coagulants - Exogenous substances used to promote blood coagulation. The endogenous BLOOD COAGULATION FACTORS are considered to be coagulants only when administered as drugs.
	Hematinics - Agents which improve the quality of the blood, increasing the hemoglobin level and the number of erythrocytes. They are used in the treatment of anemias.
	Platelet Aggregation Inhibitors - Drugs or agents which antagonize or impair any mechanism leading to blood platelet aggregation, whether during the phases of activation and shape change or following the dense-granule release reaction and stimulation of the prostaglandin-thromboxane system.
