Heart Valve Diseases

Medical Definition:	Diseases caused by or resulting in abnormal functioning of heart valves.

Heart Valve Diseases Categories.

	Aortic Valve Insufficiency - Backflow of blood from the aorta into the left ventricle, owing to imperfect functioning of the aortic semilunar valve.
	Aortic Valve Stenosis - Constriction in the opening of the aortic valve or of the supravalvular or subvalvular regions.
	Heart Murmurs - Heart sounds caused by vibrations resulting from the flow of BLOOD through the HEART. They are classified by time of occurrence during the cardiac cycle and duration, and graded by the intensity of sound on a scale of I to VI. They may be normal or abnormal.
	Heart Valve Prolapse - Displacement of the valves of the heart.
	Mitral Valve Insufficiency - Backflow of blood from the left ventricle into the left atrium, owing to imperfect functioning of the mitral valve.
	Mitral Valve Stenosis - A rheumatic disease causing diffuse thickening of the mitral valve leaflets by fibrous tissue or calcific deposits. (Harrisons' Principles of Internal Medicine, 13th ed, p1052)
	Pulmonary Valve Insufficiency - Backflow of blood from the pulmonary artery into the right ventricle, owing to imperfect functioning of the pulmonary valve.
	Pulmonary Valve Stenosis
	Tricuspid Valve Insufficiency - Backflow of blood from the right ventricle into the right atrium, owing to imperfect functioning of the tricuspid valve.
	Tricuspid Valve Stenosis - The pathologic narrowing of the orifice of the tricuspid valve. (Stedman, 25th ed)
