Hyperandrogenism
Medical Definition: | A state characterized or caused by an excessive secretion of androgens by the adrenal cortex, ovaries, or testes. The clinical significance in males is negligible, so the term is used most commonly with reference to the female. The common manifestations in women are hirsutism and virilism. It is often caused by ovarian disease (particularly the POLYCYSTIC OVARY SYNDROME) and by adrenal diseases (particularly ADRENAL GLAND HYPERFUNCTION). |
Guide Notes: | GEN or unspecified; prefer specific manifestation such as HIRSUTISM; VIRILISM; etc. |
Previously Indexed: | Androgens (1966-1993) |
