Protective Devices

Medical Definition:	Devices designed to provide personal protection against injury to individuals exposed to hazards in industry, sports, aviation, or daily activities.

Protective Devices Categories.

	Air Bags - Automotive safety devices consisting of a bag designed to inflate upon collision and prevent passengers from pitching forward. (American Heritage Dictionary, 1982)
	Ear Protective Devices - Personal devices for protection of the ears from loud or high intensity noise, water, or cold. These include earmuffs and earplugs.
	Eye Protective Devices - Personal devices for protection of the eyes from impact, flying objects, glare, liquids, or injurious radiation.
	Head Protective Devices - Personal devices for protection of heads from impact, penetration from falling and flying objects, and from limited electric shock and burn.
	Masks - Devices that cover the nose and mouth to maintain aseptic conditions or to administer inhaled anesthetics or other gases. (UMDNS, 1999)
	Protective Clothing - Clothing designed to protect the individual against possible exposure to known hazards.
	Respiratory Protective Devices - Respirators to protect individuals from breathing air contaminated with harmful dusts, fogs, fumes, mists, gases, smokes, sprays, or vapors.
	Seat Belts - Restraining belts fastened to the frame of automobiles, aircraft, or other vehicles, and strapped around the person occupying the seat in the car or plane, intended to prevent the person from being thrown forward or out of the vehicle in case of sudden deceleration.
