Spinal Cord
Medical Definition: | |
Guide Notes: | /radiogr permitted but consider MYELOGRAPHY; /surg: probably CORDOTOMY; inflammation = MYELITIS; coord IM with specific vertebrae (NIM) to locate site on spinal cord; do not confuse words containing "myel-" for spinal cord with "myel-" for bone marrow |
Anterior Horn Cells - Motor neurons in the anterior (ventral) horn of the spinal cord which project to skeletal muscles.
Extrapyramidal Tracts
Posterior Horn Cells - Neurons in the posterior (dorsal) horn of the spinal cord whose cell bodies and processes are confined entirely to the central nervous system. They receive collateral or direct terminations of dorsal root fibers. They send their axons either directly to ANTERIOR HORN CELLS or to the white matter ascending and descending longitudinal fibers.
Pyramidal Tracts - Fibers that arise from cells within the cerebral cortex, pass through the medullary pyramid, and descend in the spinal cord. Many authorities say the pyramidal tracts include both the corticospinal and corticobulbar tracts.
Spinothalamic Tracts |
