Medical Definition: | The metabolic process of all living cells (animal and plant) in which oxygen is used to provide a source of energy for the cell. |
Guide Notes: | NIM; not for micro-organisms; for plant resp, coord NIM with PLANTS /metab (IM) or specific plant /metab (IM); CELL HYPOXIA is also available |
Previously Indexed: | Oxygen Consumption (1966-1995) |

Cell Hypoxia - A condition of decreased oxygen content at the cellular level. |
![]() |
Respiratory Burst - A large increase in oxygen uptake by neutrophils and most types of tissue macrophages through activation of an NADPH-cytochrome b-dependent oxidase that reduces oxygen to a superoxide. Individuals with an inherited defect in which the oxidase that reduces oxygen to superoxide is decreased or absent (GRANULOMATOUS DISEASE, CHRONIC) often die as a result of recurrent bacterial infections. |
