Cell Differentiation

Medical Definition:	Progressive restriction of the developmental potential and increasing specialization of function that leads to the formation of specialized cells, tissues, and organs.
Guide Notes:	cell differentiation is a normal process in morphogenesis: do not confuse with CYTOPATHOGENIC EFFECT, VIRAL or CELL TRANSFORMATION, NEOPLASTIC; the specific differentiating cell: coord CELL DIFFERENTIATION with specific cell /cytol; not for micro-organism

Cell Differentiation Categories.

	Gametogenesis - The process of germ cell development from the primordial germ cells to the mature haploid gametes: ova in the female (OOGENESIS) or sperm in the male (SPERMATOGENESIS).
	Hematopoiesis - The development and formation of various types of BLOOD CELLS. Hematopoiesis can take place in the BONE MARROW (medullary) or outside the bone marrow (HEMATOPOIESIS, EXTRAMEDULLARY).
