Leukocytes
Medical Definition: | White blood cells. These include granular leukocytes (BASOPHILS; EOSINOPHILS; and NEUTROPHILS) as well as non-granular leukocytes (LYMPHOCYTES and MONOCYTES). |
Guide Notes: | decrease in no. of leukocytes or leukocytopenia = LEUKOPENIA; increase in no. of leukocytes = LEUKOCYTOSIS; leukocyte migration test: index under LEUKOCYTES /immunol (IM) + CELL MIGRATION INHIBITION (IM) |
Granulocytes - Leukocytes with abundant granules in the cytoplasm. They are divided into three groups according to the staining properties of the granules: neutrophilic, eosinophilic, and basophilic. Mature granulocytes are the NEUTROPHILS; EOSINOPHILS; and BASOPHILS. | |
Leukocytes, Mononuclear - Mature LYMPHOCYTES and MONOCYTES transported by the blood to the body's extravascular space. They are morphologically distinguishable from mature granulocytic leukocytes by their large, non-lobed nuclei and lack of coarse, heavily stained cytoplasmic granules. |
