Fatty Alcohols

Medical Definition:	Usually high-molecular-weight, straight-chain primary alcohols, but can also range from as few as 4 carbons, derived from natural fats and oils, including lauryl, stearyl, oleyl, and linoleyl alcohols. They are used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, detergents, plastics, and lube oils and in textile manufacture. (From McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms, 5th ed)

Fatty Alcohols Categories.

	Butanols - Isomeric forms and derivatives of butanol (C4H9OH).
	Dodecanol - A saturated 12-carbon fatty alcohol obtained from coconut oil fatty acids. It has a floral odor and is used in detergents, lubricating oils, and pharmaceuticals. (From McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms, 5th ed)
	Dolichol - Eicosamethyl octacontanonadecasen-1-o1. Polyprenol found in animal tissues that contains about 20 isoprene residues, the one carrying the alcohol group being saturated.
	Farnesol - A colorless liquid extracted from oils of plants such as citronella, neroli, cyclamen, and tuberose. It is an intermediate step in the biological synthesis of cholesterol from mevalonic acid in verterbrates. It has a delicate odor and is used in perfumery. 	Heptanol - A colorless liquid with a fragrant odor. It is used as an intermediate, solvent and in cosmetics.
	Hexanols - Isomeric forms and derivatives of hexanol (C6H11OH).
	Octanols - Isomeric forms and derivatives of octanol (C8H17OH).
	Pentanols - Isomeric forms and derivatives of pentanol (C5H11OH).
	Sodium Tetradecyl Sulfate - An anionic surface-active agent used for its wetting properties in industry and used in medicine as an irritant and sclerosing agent for hemorrhoids and varicose veins.
