Lymphoid Tissue

Medical Definition:	Specialized tissues that are components of the lymphatic system. They provide fixed locations within the body where a variety of LYMPHOCYTES can form, mature and multiply. The lymphoid tissues are connected by a network of LYMPHATIC VESSELS.

Lymphoid Tissue Categories.

	Adenoids
	Bursa of Fabricius - An epithelial outgrowth of the cloaca in birds similar to the thymus in mammals. It atrophies within 6 months after birth and remains as a fibrous remnant in adult birds. It is composed of lymphoid tissue and prior to involution, is the site of B-lymphocyte maturation.
	Germinal Center - The activated center of a lymphoid follicle in secondary lymphoid tissue where B-LYMPHOCYTES are stimulated by antigens and helper T cells (T-LYMPHOCYTES, HELPER-INDUCER) are stimulated to generate memory cells.
	Lymph Nodes - They are oval or bean shaped bodies (1 - 30 mm in diameter) located along the lymphatic system.
	Peyer's Patches - Lymphoid tissue on the mucosa of the small intestine.
	Spleen
