Pneumocystis carinii

Medical Definition: The prototype species of PNEUMOCYSTIS infecting the laboratory rat, Rattus norvegicus (RATS). It was formerly called Pneumocystis carinii f. sp. carinii. Other species of Pneumocystis can also infect rats.
Guide Notes: do not confuse with the human form, Pneumocystis carinii f. sp. hominis (previously indexed with PNEUMOCYSTIS CARINII) now PNEUMOCYSTIS JIROVECI; infection: coord IM with probably PNEUMONIA, PNEUMOCYSTIS (IM) but if not of lungs, coord with PNEUMOCYSTIS I
