Particle Accelerators

Medical Definition: Devices which accelerate electrically charged atomic or subatomic particles, such as electrons, protons or ions, to high velocities so they have high kinetic energy.
Guide Notes: CYCLOTRONS & SYNCHROTRONS are also available
Also Called: Betatrons,Linear Accelerators
Previously Indexed: Fast Neutrons (1971-1977),Neutrons (1966-1977),Nuclear Medicine (1967-1977)
Particle Accelerators Categories.
Canadian Medical Guide Definition Cyclotrons - Devices for accelerating charged particles in a spiral path by a constant-frequency alternating electric field. This electric field is synchronized with the movement of the particles in a constant magnetic field.
Canadian Medical Guide Definition Synchrotrons - Devices for accelerating protons or electrons in closed orbits where the accelerating voltage and magnetic field strength varies (the accelerating voltage is held constant for electrons) in order to keep the orbit radius constant.
